Itzanma III Itzanma III Itzanma III Itzanma III

ENTRY 01 // LATE 2025 – 2026

Itzanma III

Fully redesigned and fully autonomous atmospheric research capsule. Fully 3D printed with PA6-CF (carbon fiber nylon). Features a completely re-engineered active descent control assembly relocated to the base of the vehicle, integrating 3 independently controlled aerodynamic stabilization surfaces for precise trajectory and attitude control during descent.

WHAT WENT WRONG

A major issue was the low reliability of the fully redesigned cargo released system. Due to position of springs and the alignment rods on each corner of the release plate, sometimes the angle and friction were high enough to stopn the release mechanism from fully releasing. Although this could be solved through iteration, there was not enough time and I decided to shift focus to testing. Due to the poor calibration of the force sensors for engine thrust, readings were not accurate enough. However, this is easily fixed through software.

ENTRY 02 // 2024

Ehécatl LCC-3

Fully autonomous, flight-tested experimental research vehicle. Achieved milestone as a pioneering 3D-printed cargo capsule to successfully flight-test. Features a fully integrated mechanical payload door release system, precision drogue parachute deployment architecture, and a three-solid-rocket-motor landing integration system for controlled landing and reuse.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Basic tolerance issues and part strength solved through iteration. During the triple static fire, one of the engines did not light up. After investigation, it was concluded that the failure to ignite was due to a faulty ignitor. However, during the landing attempt, the engine in the same engine bay also failed to ignite; the problem was in the electrical lines. There was also a premature stage separation caused by first-stage design.

ENTRY 03 // 2023

CTS-4 Capsule

Lightweight foam-board and fiberglass capsule featuring an apogee-triggered, mechanically deployable flap system designed to increase aerodynamic drag and reduce terminal descent velocity.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Given that the vehicle was not designed using CAD, a major issue present was the imprecise path the flaps followed during release and retraction. Also affected by the lack of precision due to parts being handmade. However, the retractable flap design helped me a lot during the design of the aerodynamic surfaces of the Itzanma III capsule.

TVC Engine

ENTRY 04 // 2023

TVC Rocket Engine

A compact experimental solid rocket motor engineered to prototype thrust vector control capabilities. Built entirely from accessible workshop components, the system features a flexible-membrane TVC assembly actively controlled via an onboard Arduino microcontroller. Validated through 5 rigorous static fire test campaigns to evaluate vector actuation, structural resilience, and thrust management.

WHAT WENT WRONG

The engine parts were handmade, so there was a lack of precision that led to poor attachment between parts and imprecise paths of movement in the TVC system. However, the project laid the foundation of knowledge of rocket engine production along with basic thrust-vector control.

SPEC SHEET

ENTRY 05 // 2022

CTS-2 Capsule

A $50-budget experimental flight capsule and a major milestone as the first vehicle in the program to integrate active electronics. Controlled via an onboard Arduino, the system successfully demonstrated braking engine activation during flight. Validated through two pre-flight static test campaigns.

WHAT WENT WRONG

The capsule’s power supply had to be changed right before flight due to the first stage’s lower thrust than anticipated. This didn’t hurt the vehicle. The capsule’s cheap ultrasonic sensor was mainly affected by the ground surface and weather conditions, so it failed to produce readings precise enough for a successful landing. However, the engine ignition was successful, proving what could be done with limited resources.

CTS-1 & Early Pathfinders

The first prototypes were built at age 12 from foam board, metal tape, and hot glue, then advanced to fiberglass, and then to 3D printing. Together they show my progress over the years and my learning curve.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Given that the vehicles were hand-made from cardboard, foamboard, and hot glue, they were significantly weak and imprecise. The ones that had electronics, they were also poorly made and often lacked soldering; instead, a header-pin approach was taken. However, without them, none of my other projects would exist.

Telescope filter wheel Telescope filter wheel, second view Telescope filter wheel, third view

ENTRY 01 // 2026

Telescope Filter Wheel

A filter wheel for my telescope camera. It has nine slots: seven for filters, one empty for a clear view, and one closed slot that blocks the light completely. The design is modular, and an Arduino controls it. I also designed a companion app for the telescope. It pairs with the wheel, tells it which filter to rotate into place, and takes the pictures, so a set of shots through different filters runs without touching the setup.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Initially controlled wheel positioning using an open-loop step-count method. However, accumulated motor slip and step drift over multiple rotations led to filter slot misalignment. Resolved this by designing a custom mechanical indexing pattern that triggers limit switches upon exact slot alignment, providing reliable closed-loop position feedback to the Arduino for precise slot registration

ENTRY 02 // 2025 – 2026

Autonomous Model Car (In Development)

A custom 1/10-scale 4WD mechanical chassis engineered for outdoor autonomous navigation, powered by a Raspberry Pi 5 and BTS7960 high-current motor drivers. Features custom structural mounting brackets integrating an advanced sensor suite: a NEO-M8N GPS for real-world route navigation, an MPU9250 IMU for precise heading and orientation, and a COIN-D6 LiDAR dedicated to real-time environmental mapping and obstacle avoidance.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Ran into normal issues with component tolerances due to a lack of precision on some spec sheets, magnified through 3D printing. Also dealt with an issue on the 7.4V-to-5V step-down converter to make sure the microcontroller and 5V components could operate safely. Faced some problems printing the wheels with TPU as well, but it turned out to be a slicer setup issue rather than a design flaw.

ENTRY 03 // 2025

Humanoid Robot

Designed in Fusion 360 in one week and assembled in four days. Features 20 degrees of freedom (DOF) with a modular joint architecture actuated by MG996R servos, 3D printed entirely in carbon-fiber engineering filaments.

WHAT WENT WRONG

Had no issues during design and fabrication. However, while adapting the IR camera module to fit inside the head space, the light sensors broke; I desoldered them and soldered new ones to fix it. During testing, I noticed a lot of servo jitter in parts facing high stress because the hinges were mounted directly onto the servo shafts.

ENTRY 04 // 2023

NASA Perseverance Rover Model

Designed from scratch in under two months while teaching myself Fusion 360. Features a fully functional, 3D-printed mechanical rocker-bogie suspension system accurately mimicking NASA's rover geometry. Engineered with autonomous self-driving capabilities utilizing onboard sonic sensors for real-time obstacle avoidance, alongside live data transmission telemetry loops.

WHAT WENT WRONG

This was my first time 3D printing and designing, so I had a lot of trouble with tolerances. I also didn’t know about print layer orientation, so some parts that were exposed to high forces failed. All of these problems were solved through iteration, but most importantly, they taught me many skills that I now frequently use when working on other projects.

Astrophotography

OUTSIDE THE WORKSHOP // SINCE AGE 7

Pointing the telescope up.

I started astrophotography at age 7 when I received my first telescope, a 127EQ reflector. At 12, I upgraded to a refractor scope and began capturing planetary targets, alongside deep sky photography using a DSLR and a 55-250mm lens to pull in targets like the Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion Nebula. Now, I've got my hands on a vintage 1980s 8-inch C8 Cassegrain. With it, I'm planning to capture high-detail planetary images, build time-lapses, and explore concepts like planetary rotation using entirely my own collected data.

PROCESSING

Deep sky images are built from long-exposure image stacking (integration): many individual exposures, aligned and combined to pull faint detail out of the noise. Planets are captured as video and stacked from only the sharpest frames, a technique known as lucky imaging.

My human side

“Nothing is impossible, you are just not spending enough time on it.”

My life changed when I was five years old, watching TV. I was playing with Legos on the floor, and out of the sudden a random movie started playing. It was “Fly Me to the Moon,” a story told through the perspective of a group of flies whose curiosity led them to get on board a Saturn V and fly to the moon along with the human astronauts. This was the first time I saw a rocket, and probably the first time I saw any close-ups of the moon. At that age, I already had an interest in the sky, especially at night, but I never imagined it was possible to reach the moon. Since then, I knew I wanted to be an aerospace engineer, although I didn’t know what aerospace or engineering was. My life has revolved around space since I was little, and now that I am older, this passion grows more and more. Just like the flies, my curiosity led me here, but rather than going to the moon, I want to be the one building the rockets.
